Wild Math Third Grade is everything you need to teach math outdoors! Make your third grade math year active and fun. Learning outside is engaging, naturally hands-on and uses multiple senses. Using the natural environment as the basis for your curriculum makes concepts more concrete and has been shown to improve children’s attention spans.
The curriculum is organized around units and skills typically covered in third grade math. Each skill is listed followed by activities on how to learn and practice the skill. Teaching guidance is provided for more complex topics. Each unit also includes a list of my favorite math books and games at the end of each chapter. Books and games are great outside in warm weather and inside during extreme weather or dark winter evenings. The math skills described here have been compiled using several different math curriculums and represent what is typically taught in third grade in the United States. A suggested unit pacing guide, sample week plan, and planning sheet are included in the resource section.
This math guide is packed with ideas and color photos of how to use what is naturally abundant in your area to learn math! Use leaves, flowers, acorns, fruit, muffin tins, egg cartons and buckets to explore multiplication and division. Review Addition and subtraction strategies from second grade using place value sticks. Learn fractions using outdoor number lines. Explore perimeter and area using gardens, playgrounds, buildings and tiles.
Suggested materials and gear for learning outside are included. As well as tips for families learning math outside in more urban areas.
Math Topics Covered:
Addition and Subtraction
Multiplication and Division
Measurement and Data
Time and Money
(see thumbnails of the table of contents to see each skill covered)
Note: 3rd grade in the US is what I call a catch-up grade. Time is built in for students to solidify skills from prior grades, particularly multidigit addition and subtraction. The 3rd grade Wild Math contains the same instructions on how to teach multi-digit addition and subtraction as the 2nd grade math for review and those that are new to Wild Math. It contains some new and some favorite activities from 2nd grade.
Guide length is 71 pages and a PDF document.
